A 78-year-old Wauwatosa resident recalls his life in mostly vivid details, a skill honed through multiple interviews and his self-published autobiography. It is a life worth telling and considering because it is more than personal background; It is a window into unvarnished local history.

My idea of decorating is to keep it simple. A few strands of single-colored lights, a wreath, some holly. No yard figurines, no flashing lights and for Pete’s sake, no inflatables. John finds my simple tastes amusing. He doesn’t consider it a light display unless it can be seen from Mars.

This issue marks our 14th edition of Tosa Connection magazine. It began with our Back to School Issue in the Fall of 2015. In the past three-and-a-half years, we’ve learned a lot about this city that we all love and call home. I would like to dedicate this issue to the memories, and the living spirit of my big brother Steve Haise.

The casually reclining woman continues to look aside and downward – quite stone faced. It’s difficult to tell if she looks ashamed of being naked, though past reaction to her has caused decades of shuttling her between local parks and now shunned amid stacks of pipes and lumber.

Oh, how times have changed. Christmas has morphed into celebration of multiple holidays and what once was a traditional two days of observance is now an extended season. What hasn’t changed is that this is a time for joy, reflection and remembrance.

Here is our toy philosophy: A great toy is one that’s fun to play with over and over again. It is durable and not too technical. It summons the best parts of children: imagination, social and communication skills, physical dexterity, and cognitive skills. It offers a delightful and safe way to explore the world.

It is often said “it takes a village to raise a child.” These words are especially true in times of tragedy, and lie at the heart of the Kyle’s Korner mission. Nestled amongst the shops on North Avenue in East Tosa, the unassuming home of Kyle’s Korner serves grieving families throughout the Milwaukee area.

It’s the season of thankfulness, snow and holiday joy. Every year, I’m grateful for our engaged and passionate residents. You are the heart and strength of our community. I’m delighted to see and meet new young families in Tosa.

Like a fantasy novel set underground, this community has its own esoteric language and traditions. For its frost-footed inhabitants, there is nothing quite like sharing stories while broomstacking following a bonspiel. Who are they? Wauwatosa curlers.
