While the number of local businesses is growing, so too are those entrepreneurs infusing their own stamp on a major dose of creativity. No need to build from scratch when innovation can give new life to old spaces. Four enterprises have done just that, converting and breathing new life into part or all of structures that once held a different purpose.

While the Milwaukee County grounds have entered a new era in healthcare, research and residential options, a portion of its unearthed past poses new questions about our humanity.

The grand entrance to the WWC beckons newcomers. Aside the entrance a copper plaque reads “National Registry of Historic Places.” Indeed, this elegant building, called home (away from home) by 200 Wauwatosa women, is also evidence of the rich history of women’s movements across the country and in Wauwatosa.

The humble beginnings for what would become our award-winning Zoo have their roots in Washington Park in the late 19th century. While the Zoo began with only small mammals and birds, interest and opportunity meant that the Zoo could soon boast over 800 various creatures.
